The core of Gary Becker’s thinking is the rigorous application of microeconomic analysis to spheres not traditionally considered economic.
His genius lay in establishing a coherent theoretical framework demonstrating that rational choice theory underlies behaviors as complex as investment in human capital, crime, and addiction.
In his classes, Becker would develop complex formulas on the blackboard.
Most students were concerned with learning the math behind the formulas to pass the exams, but without understanding much of what was really behind them.
They didn’t care much. They behaved like zombies.
Gary would challenge these zombies with the constant question: “What’s the economics behind that equation?” Few knew.
He constantly sought the philosophical value and the profound logic behind the apparent logic of human decisions.
He sought to teach people to think. To look beyond the equations and formulas.
For me, that was his greatest contribution. He was my mentor. He taught zombies to think. Just like he did with me.
He taught me to look behind the looking glass.
Gary was a great cosmic teacher.
